Modern Ireland - New series for TV3

Modern Ireland is a five part BCI funded observational documentary series for TV3.

In the first programme, Modern Ireland: Supersized Shes, we followed two female body builders Inga Beinara & Sophia McNamara on the day of Ireland's biggest Body Building competition in Limerick. We also followed the event organiser Mick Bullman. From morning till night we saw the jitters, the fake tan, the unimaginable diets, and the celebrations or commiserations when the winners were announced. It was a unique look at a little known section of modern Irish society.

Our second programme focused on Ireland's celebrity culture when we followed Amanda Brunker, Brian Ormond & Pippa O'Connor, and VIP Publisher Michael O'Doherty on the day of the VIP Style Awards. This behind the scenes look at how the other half live gave us a unique insight into the glamourous side of modern Irish life.

In the third installment in the series, Modern Ireland: The First Holy Communion, we met three of the 60,000 children who made their First Communion in 2009.  With almost 80 million euro spent on the festivities throughout the country, three families show us how they chose to celebrate their child’s special day. Did the recession taken its toll on the festivities? Have Communion celebrations become all about the cards full of cash or does faith still have a part to play in modern Ireland?

In Co Louth, the Boylan Family are keen to pull out all the stops for their daughter Caitlin’s special day, in spite of family differences and the fact that they’re feeling the pinch, with father, Patrick, currently unemployed.  We also meet the Doherty Family from Donegal and the Onono family, originally from Nigeria, now living in Dublin, for whom the day is all about the celebration of Faith and their traditional Nigerian culture.
In Modern Ireland: Gone to the Dogs we went behind the scenes at the European Winners Dog Show this year held at the RDS in Dublin. We saw all the tension that goes into this seminal event in the dog lovers calendar. We met the Knowles family who are all involved in the showing of dogs. We also met Michael Coad and his partner Geoff Corish who run a professional dog grooming and handling service in the UK. And we followed Sean Delmar, President of the Irish Kennel Club, who had the difficult task of crowning this year's Best in Show.
The last episode in the series was Modern Ireland: She's Got The Look. We spent one day following three very different characters with one thing in common – self-improvement – they want it, or they’re helping others achieve it.  We meet model Ally Garvey who is going under the knife for the breast augmentation surgery she's always wanted. We spend the day with Dr Mark Hamilton, cosmetic doctor with The Hospital Group, who specialises in non-invasive cosmetic procedures, such as botox.  He’s a busy man.  And finally we meet life coach and style guru, Lisa Fitzpatrick who gives 50 year-old Geraldine a life-changing makeover – without the nip and tuck.
